Hey folks,

Earlier this year I did a number of trade shows across the country.  While I
humped large pieces of foldable presentation fixtures from airport to hotel,
minivan to show car, I noticed all the cool kids (damned marketing people!) were
toting around these fancy dancy rollup banner stands.

I ended up having two of them made by a company in Toronto which specializes in
parade floats, corporate displays, etc.

Earlier this week DaveK mentioned that ParLUGment was bringing a banner to Hobby Show.  A lot of LTC and LUGs have them now.  I always thought about getting a banner made, but they're expensive, and hard to hang.   They're handy for events, they convey a bit of organization.  But the ones out there seem to require some union guy named Al to string from the rafters, or look weird.

So I thought, hey, why not have one of those cool rollup banner stands done?

Problem was, I went back over my expense reports and found they cost $1400 for
the pair. Whoops.  Anyways, here's a project for the hardcore:  Is there anyone
who can build this:

It's basically three pieces of 1/2" pipe stuck in the base of a burned out
halogen torchiere lamp (the apex of Walmart/dorm room/bachelorpad style).  If
you're extra creative, you could make the large pipe break into sections.  But
it doesn't have to be elaborate.  The banner part tapes onto the horizontals
with velcro.

We'll pay for the parts etc out of the ol' budget (aka, the Ziplock bag of cash
from shirts, donations etc) and I think I know how to deal with the actual
banner part.  But the frame I need some help on.

Anyone up for a challenge?  Want to pretend you're on Monster Garage?  Anyone
have a burnt out halogen torchiere lamp and already have priced the replacement
bulb?    I'll even do the "Freebie, zip zero nada!" voiceover when I bring the
velcro.  Serious!

Calum

(...) Isn't this pretty much the same as a tripod stand for a projector screen? (URL) which seem to retail for 100-200USD, brand new, with the screen. Someone must have an old one from home movies stuck in their garage that the stand could be (...) (20 years ago, 29-Oct-04, to lugnet.org.ca.rtltoronto)
