I'm pretty open to sawing them open and soldering the N scale decoder in.
Motors are pretty disposable as far as I'm concerned.  In fact, I have more
motors than locomotive models, so it's not a big deal. :) It's really the
organizational issue of getting EVERYONE onto DCC at some point-which means
demos, gradual introduction of DCC onto the layout, plus the logistics of a
shared command station, loco programming and identification, etc.

I doubt it's any much different than the WAMALUG setup, after reading up on
decoders, I've decided to go for the same Digitrax (cheapest) DN140 decoder,
even if we have PIC programming facilities at my office.  As for the command
station, I'm not going to use the same MRC controller but a scratch built PC
based one.  The major reasoning for that is that there can be multiple
throttles around the layout and better still, they're cheap pot based joysticks.

Better still, if some group does enough motors that they get it swotted and
want to start selling already converted units, because they can do it easily
and see it as a fundraiser for their org, I would be buying in a heartbeat.

Probably not for now-we'll obviously do a batch conversion from time to time
for GTA area folks, but the cost of sending them around and finding the time
to do such a thing is really too high.  Plus, it's not hard at all to do,
just crack open the motor casing (as shown on numerous websites and done by
Chris just today even) then solder on the decoder, breaking the leads.

That is why I said that DCC will be a topic at BrickFest, one that I am
eager to see discussion on. Do you have anyone going to BrickFest from
rtlToronto?

I saw that on the agenda and was interested, but I don't think there's
enough of an interest here-largely because there is very little Technic
content so far and we're a primarily Technic group.  Plus it comes right
after a string of local events (rtlToronto8, train1) and before our second
train show.  I think we'll all be Lego'd out! :)
