(...) What's wrong with allowing a purely mechanical solution? It would be MUCH easier to build an RCX controlled robot, but if someone can make one that's completely mechanical, wouldn't that be cool to see? Isn't that the point? (20 years ago, 27-Sep-04, to lugnet.org.ca.rtltoronto)

I just raised the question to avoid the possibility of a simple mechanical solution, as you have suggested :-) At one point, I thought about the problem of driving straight and detecting when the bot is just about to go over the (...) (...) I would think this should not be allowed. If it is it changes the nature of the contest. What's the point in in having the lines across the table.
