Well I don't think there is a "proper procedure" to starting a LUG. First
thing I would do would be to post in the relevant .loc.us.fl groups to try and
drum up interest.
Thats what we (NELUG) did. Our first meeting was at my house with 5 members
almost 2 years ago. Now we have over 100 people on our mailing list and
consistantly draw between 15 and 20 people to our meetings which we have to
hold in a reserved room in a restaurant. We tend to meet at least 1 or 2 times
a month and it is a great time.
You have nothing to loose. If you can just get one or two others interested
that is probably enough to get started. Of course TexLUG started with one
persons dream and it seemed to not get interest but now all of a sudden there
seem to be people comming out of the woodwork with interest in TexLUG.

No not to me. Sure the first comers get to choose a name which can be broad
but if you can't make their meetings and you don't want to work with them to
set up meetings in another location then I think you have every right to start
a new LUG. I would consider calling it NWFLUG or PanFLUG or something that
relates your geographic position.

As for the drive that is a problem but I don't think the "that's another state"
argument holds water. If it is a 15 minute drive over the boarder to a meeting
then I think you should do that. New England makes up 6 states, of which we
have people on our mailing list from all 6 and we have had people come from at
least 3 of those states for meetings. That said I think GardenSLUG is probably
more convenient for people from SW Connecticut, I don't think we are going to
go down and twist any arms if they decide to be in GardenSLUG and/or NELUG.
Anyway if you don't have any LUGs convenient to your location then I say start
a new one but don't start a new one just because there is an imaginary line
drawn in the sand called a state boarder.

| Okay, I've got a question to all those out there...what's the proper procedure for starting a new LUG? I reside in Florida, in Tallahassee. For those of you unfamiliar with the layout of Florida, that's quite a long distance from Orlando, Tampa, and (...) (23 years ago, 25-Jul-01, to lugnet.org)
