Mladen: Agree, CG+anime=ugh, 99% of the time. See Blue Submarine No.6 or Vandread for good examples. On the other hand, there are anime like Cowboy Bebop and Ghost in the Shell that use CG very well.

Jason: I think what Mladen’s complaining about is the tendency to mix cel animation and CG, not CG itself.

Personally, I don’t mind CG-only, or even most CG/live action blends, but anime with CG segments just looks bad most of the time. I don’t know why, could just be me.

In this case, I’m more interested in whether or not they bugger the plot and characters up as badly as the old, horrible OVA. If they do even slightly better, I’ll be happy.

o.k. gotta counterpoint, folks. i agree that mixing cel-shaded animation along with cg is kind of tacky. HOWEVER, if you pay close enough attention to the appleseed trailer, you should notice that the movie is not alternating between cg and cel-shading (like blue sub no. 6), but actually uses a hybrid that takes cg and makes it look like cel-shading. therefore, the transition between cg action scenes and character scenes is virtually non-existent (unlike blue sub). i think that it is cutting edge and also looks spectacular!! the only series i can think of that exemplifies what i’m talking about is a spider-man series on mtv (i think) that reduces textures and shading in cg to make the characters and environment look more like a comic book cartoon. the “hotwheels” series also uses this type of animation. someone correct me if i’m wrong.

I disagree. Every anime/CG mix is different. I'm going to wait until I see the film to make any value judgements, because the trailer doesn't give a close enough look for me to form any sort of opinion. If the plot and characters are more-or-less (...) (20 years ago, 30-Mar-04, to lugnet.off-topic.geek)
