Not as much as you might think. The Animatrix has an extremely informative look at what is involved in the anime tradition, and a lot of the uniquely distinctive characterstics are merely byproducts of the many budget-saving techniques that they had to develop to get their industry off the ground. American animation is where you see most of the cutting edge animation technology used (notice that the only Animatrix clip filmed in CGI is also the only one filmed in the US, while one of the Japanese clips is actually a series of watercolor paintings). While American animators concentrated on creating new technologies, Japanese put their energy into developing new techniques. Peter Chung pretty much defines the difference between mainstream American and Japanese animation styles when he said, “Traditional Western art is interested in creating an illusion of nature, whereas traditional Eastern painting is more about the gesture of the painter.”

(...) o.k. gotta counterpoint, folks. i agree that mixing cel-shaded animation along with cg is kind of tacky. HOWEVER, if you pay close enough attention to the appleseed trailer, you should notice that the movie is not alternating between cg and (...) (21 years ago, 31-Mar-04, to lugnet.build.mecha, FTX)
