    DPI help —Bram Lambrecht
[FUT lugnet.off-topic.geek] I'm going to be printing a rendering of my current architecture on a 24" plotter, so I need to how large I should render the image. The maximum color resolution of the plotter is 300x300 dpi. However, IIRC, since printers (...) (23 years ago, 27-Apr-01, to lugnet.off-topic.geek, lugnet.publish)

(...) Depends on the driver, I think. I know HP inkjets actually change ink dot size to achieve a better appearance without needing higher resolution.... My suggestion would be to experiment -- render something simple and try printing it out at (...) (23 years ago, 28-Apr-01, to lugnet.off-topic.geek)

(...) Render at 1/2 the target DPI as if going to 150 LPI Film. 9000x3000 and use Supersampling to smooth out any blends and over hard edges. Best DaveG (23 years ago, 28-Apr-01, to lugnet.off-topic.geek)

         Re: DPI help —David Goeb
(...) Default is off or Old non-adaptive. Most 3+ and megapov ports have the Adaptive(aka supersampling) option and it's worth the slight time hit. Best DaveG (23 years ago, 28-Apr-01, to lugnet.off-topic.geek)

(...) I'm using POV-Ray 3.1...are you talking about +A0.3 or some other command line option? --Bram Bram Lambrecht bram@cwru.edu (URL) (23 years ago, 28-Apr-01, to lugnet.off-topic.geek)

         Re: DPI help —David Goeb
(...) +AM2 +J0.5 +R3 Method one is called supersampling in the Doc's but is only half a supersample. Method 2 is much better as cells are recursivly sampled. You can change the threshold too but 0.3(default) is good. Check your Docs for more info. (...) (23 years ago, 28-Apr-01, to lugnet.off-topic.geek)

        Re: DPI help —Todd Lehman
(...) All depends on your viewing distance... If it's a poster to hang on the wall, intended to be viewed at 5 feet away or more, you can easily get away with 150x150 dpi, and often 75x75 dpi. Also depends on how quick/abrupt your color changes are, (...) (23 years ago, 4-May-01, to lugnet.off-topic.geek)

        Re: DPI help —Bram Lambrecht
(...) From some test prints, I saw that the DPI isn't going to matter very much, so I went with 250 DPI to save some rendering time. However, it's taking almost as long to print as it did to render. The image is about 200 MB (uncompressed), but the (...) (23 years ago, 8-May-01, to lugnet.off-topic.geek)

        Re: DPI help —Matthew Gerber
Hey Bram, Sorry I didn't get into this thread before. What print driver are you using? Are you trying to spool the whole image over first, or printing while the file sends? Also, what program are you using to print from, and can you export to other (...) (23 years ago, 8-May-01, to lugnet.off-topic.geek)

(...) But Kinko's isn't free! :) I'm using the Win95/98/NT driver for the HP DesignJet 750C D/A1. I finally got the plot to work by printing to file on my own machine (much faster than the machine hooked up to the plotter), with the "Use memory in (...)    (...) At 200 dpi, I was able to do a 60x20" and a 48x16" plot using this method. The guy who runs the lab wanted a copy too :) Now where do I get 60" long frame parts.... --Bram Bram Lambrecht bram@cwru.edu (URL) (23 years ago, 9-May-01, to lugnet.off-topic.geek)
