Setting the From: header in slrn

Arg. My nntp "From:" header usually looks like this: From: "Sproaticus" <jsproat@io.com> ...but for some reason, slrn seems to want to do this: From: Sproaticus@yo-yo.pro...novell.com (Sproaticus) ...and won't let me change it. This header is (...) (24 years ago, 29-Jun-00, to lugnet.off-topic.geek, lugnet.admin.nntp)

Re: Setting the From: header in slrn

(...) I'd get around a lot faster if my foot wasn't always in my mouth. Item #13 in the slrn FAQ in v0.9.6.2 specifies how to do this. I just need to define a s-lan macro called "make_from_string_hook" that returns the "From:" header as a string. (...) (24 years ago, 29-Jun-00, to lugnet.off-topic.geek, lugnet.admin.nntp)

Re: Setting the From: header in slrn

(...) put these lines in your ~/.slrnrc file: hostname "io.com" set username "jsproat" set realname" Sproaticus" you'll probably also want the 'set custom_headers "X-Real-Life-Name: your name here"', too, if you don't already have it. you might have (...)   Re: Setting the From: header in slrn

(...) Actually, the problem was coming from the fact that slrn uses () instead of <> to separate the two, and the order *is* reversed. Here's what I ended up doing: In .slrnrc: interpret "lugnet_macros.sl" in lugnet_macros.sl: define (...) (24 years ago, 29-Jun-00, to lugnet.off-topic.geek, lugnet.admin.nntp)

(...) or, you could do it that way, too. :) any idea how to change the messageid header? (24 years ago, 29-Jun-00, to lugnet.off-topic.geek, lugnet.admin.nntp)

Re: Setting the From: header in slrn

(...) I dunno. I think that the nntp server has final authority on that, but I'm still catching up on my nntp know-how... Cheers, - jsproat (24 years ago, 30-Jun-00, to lugnet.off-topic.geek, lugnet.admin.nntp)

Re: Setting the From: header in slrn

(...) Setting that header wouldn't have any effect -- the server ignores it if the client sends it. --Todd (24 years ago, 30-Jun-00, to lugnet.off-topic.geek, lugnet.admin.nntp)

Re: Setting the From: header in slrn

(...) Don't mess with the Message-ID header. --Todd (24 years ago, 30-Jun-00, to lugnet.off-topic.geek, lugnet.admin.nntp)

Re: Setting the From: header in slrn

(...) Wasn't planning to. :-, IIRC, the server would throw away a bogus Message-ID header, wouldn't it? Cheers, - jsproat (24 years ago, 10-Jul-00, to lugnet.off-topic.geek, lugnet.admin.nntp)

Re: Setting the From: header in slrn

(...) Nope, it was changing my "From:" field that fixed the issue. Cheers, - jsproat (24 years ago, 10-Jul-00, to lugnet.off-topic.geek, lugnet.admin.nntp)

Re: Setting the From: header in slrn

(...) i must have missed this message when you first posted it. what's wrong with messing with the message-id header? slrn took care of it for me on it's own, but now i let your server do the work. :) it's your server, so i'll leave it alone if you (...)   Re: Setting the From: header in slrn

(...) As long as your newsreader (or posting agent/client) either leaves it blank or sets it to a unique value, it's OK. But it's not something to mess with in the same way that other headers like the 'From:' line can be messed with. IOW, the (...)   Re: Setting the From: header in slrn

(...) makes sense, message-ids are supposed to be unique, i just wanted to change what part of the random id was. :) also, i'm curious as to the path stamp every message gets .. it seems most people have just '!lugnet', but others have '!lugnet!id'.
