What version of ssh are you using?  I have installed ssh-1.2.27
on many machines and it works correctly right out of the box.
does jsproat have a password set in /etc/passwd or is it blank?

Hey all,

I've built and installed sshd (1) on my Red Hat 6.2 box, and the client seems
to work just fine, but the server won't accept connections.  I've tried
"AllowUsers x,y" and "AllowGroups x,y" in sshd_config, and I've played with
about every combination of of the authentication parameters (IgnoreRhosts,
PasswordAuthentication, RSAAuthentication, etc) but I still can't connect.
I've given sshd its identity (and dsa) keys with ssh-keygen (it's in the
makefile).  Running sshd -d gives me the log (partial shown):

Connection from 137.65.xxx.xxx port xxx
debug: Client protocol version 1.5; client software version MindTerm v1.2
debug: Local version string SSH-1.99-OpenSSH-2.1
debug: Sent xxx bit public key and xxx bit host key.
debug: Encryption type: 3des
debug: Received session key; encryption turned on.
debug: Installing crc compensation attack detector.
Faking authloop for illegal user jsproat from 137.65.xxx.xxx port xxx
Connection closed by 137.65.xxx.xxx

That part about "illegal user" concerns me; the docs don't exactly explain
this.  Am I putting user jsproat into the wrong group or ACL?  Arg.  Does
anyone have a copy of a generic-ish sshd_config they'd like to share?  Or am I
using the wrong ssh package?

Cheers,
- jsproat

(...) jsproat has a password. I am using shadow passwords, but that's pretty much standard now anyway, right? (I'm using OpenSSH 1.2.0 BTW.) Cheers, - jsproat (24 years ago, 12-May-00, to lugnet.off-topic.geek)
