The author of that piece has obviously NEVER been to the
Continent, or even in the English countryside:
"Australia's long distances and empty roads have traditionally
fostered a relaxed habit of taking a leak at the side of the
road, a practice than would be impractical or frowned upon in
the congested countryside of Europe."
I can't even TELL you how many times I saw people urinating
by the side of freeways or busy country roads--not even in
the shrubbery, but RIGHT THERE ON THE SHOULDER. I was totally
gobsmacked--in the USA, you do that only with the *greatest*
of contrition and embarassment, even way out in the sticks.
My favorite was people doing their business right on the
drain sluice on the Breestraat--the central street in the
city center--in Leiden (on a Friday night). Very classy.
You'd think they could at least get to a canal, like every-
one else...
