Hear, hear! Zelda, while a fine game in its own right, has forever perverted
role-playing.
True RPGs such as AD&D and Traveller allowed the player to create a
fully-formed character to play as, to encounter a dynamic and growing world,
and to interact with live peers. As such, I would readily let my kids play
them as I would for any educational tool.
Computer RPGs such as Zelda and Xenogears cubbyhole the player, limit their
choices at any given time, railroad the player into the same old situations,
finish the game with three or four possible endings, and ultimately isolate
the player from friends and family. Considering the altermatives, I would be
hard-pressed to let my kids get too involved into this type of game.
I'm probably coming off as pretty opinionated, but when I spend 48+ hours on
the same thing, I want it to be pretty significant.
Cheers,
