hey, y'all ~
LOTF is one of my faves! mostly because of the connection i find in it to
my all-time favourite book. the LOTF characters remind me of the lost boys
in peter pan! both books explore the the angst, isolation, and frustration
of life in those years between child and adulthood. you may say LOTF is
bloodier and more graphic than peter pan, but then, i'd strongly reccommend
sitting down and (re-)reading the original james barrie version of peter
pan, "Peter and Wendy"!
the point is that true innocence knows no difference between good and bad.
"evil" deeds can be committed innocently. the ship in LOTF represents the
emerging awareness of the realizition of good and evil. (eve + apple =
oops!) the _awareness_ is the actual loss of innocence, not the preceeding
bloody deeds. peter pan never makes such a realization, and thusly never
grows up, and can keep killing and maiming pirates with impunity. ;-)
