Yah, but they're too long. :-, I've described _The Hobbit_ to her many times,
and in some depth, and so I suspect that some time in her life, she'll end up
reading at least that one.

Any good storyteller will tell you that the idea's been there all along --
though it usually isn't. :-,
In particular, Tolkien's idea took many forms and went through many changes
before it was finally published; it, in fact, has changed several times
*between* publishings. Most of the changes have been of a polishing nature;
though the biggest change that comes to mind is how _LotR_ changed from being a
sequel to _The Hobbit_, to becoming a mythology of its own right -- of which
_The Hobbit_ was ultimately an upbeat interlude within. External influences,
like WWII and the gradual maturing of Tolkien's audience (i.e. his son Chris),
had a lot to do with these modifications, and I suspect that the story just
wouldn't be as good without them.
Tolkien took the story-forming process quite a deal further than Lucas,
however. The volumes of cultural notes and backstory that he never published
(while he was alive, anyway) is a testament to that.

I love that line. Sluggy is awesome.
