FA Babies(?)
I caught a 20 minute news item last night concerning a UK couple how have
adopted twins from the US. They did this as:
1) There is over demand for babies in the UK this means that prospective
adoptive parents find it hard to get very young children.
2) They feel that they would fail to meat the UK selection criteria even if
there were babies available.
However, there is much more to the story than that. It appears that the
babies they now have had already been placed with a family in the US, and
that the natural mother had tricked the US family into returning the babies
to her when the UK couple doubled her expenses (~$14000).
All this means that the story has a very broad appeal. The tabloid papers
are running babies for auction over the internet type stories:

At the other end of the market, the broadsheets are questioning the adoption
laws in the UK and the US:

As summary of the story is here:

and here (complete with cute baby picture!):

All this leaves me feeling:
Disappointed that UK law could not stop this we have a some sort of
agreement with the US which means that UK couple will only have to meet US
standards.
Disappointed that US law could not stop this.
Disappointed regarding the apparent morals of the natural mother.
Disappointed regarding the apparent morals of the UK couple.
Pity for the US family involved (The Allens):
Mr Kilshaw, aged 45, was adamant that they would not return the girls,
claiming the Allens had no legal rights because they had not completed
adoption proceedings and the birth mother had changed her mind. Ms Wecker
claimed that Mrs Allen was an unfit mother because she had an old conviction
for embezzlement.

| Scott, thanks for pointing this story out. (...) Well, it's rude to back out of the deal I suppose, but at the same time, if you can get a little cash out of it and send the kid to a better family, then why not? (...) Why would a government stop (...) (24 years ago, 19-Jan-01, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)
