So if debate's flourishing on LUGNET - fine.
If I note that debate gets a lot of posts - ok - then we're acting in a
'normal' manner - I'd actually be more concerned if it was languishing.

.debate may be getting lots of posts, but I'm not sure that I'd call it
flourishing (though the recent posts do seem to be rising out of the
quagmire some).

For debate to flourish, I think the scope of topics and the numbers taking
part have to grow - not the number of posts. The problem is that every
question gets turned around, and ends focusing on narrow political/religious
points (Frank's point I think). There are those here who think that if they
repeat the same opinion over and over and over and over again until everyone
goes home - they have won. The way to ‘win’ a debate to have those taking
part question their own beliefs - not leave the room due to insults or shear
boredom.

I haven't left a debate yet simply because of sheer boredom.
It's actually a lack of time.
I'm amazed to see all the time that some folk can devote to these threads, I
don't have enough time to build LEGO much less respond to all the postings I'd
like to.

That I jump in here or there a bit is a great thing by me...
But I'd love to actually sit down and discuss some of the things we've been
hitting around in this group with the active members. Typing responses is
really tedious, what with the 100's of sub points that you can get lost in as
well as the misunderstandings that get worked out much faster face to face,
than in the time lags typical of postings.

My nightmare post - I post during the day - go home and build LEGO and return
to check on my posting the following day (harder now without a search function)
and see that there are 50 followups and my idea is lost in replies and counter
replies and "this is what he meant" postings. (It's far far worse on weekends)
