You can say that is true, but I prefer to believe that faith and evidence
and even personal experience all contribute to one's proof of God.

That's fine on a personal level, but you have to recognize that faith,
evidence(1), and personal experience will never prove His existence to
anoter person, as long as that person is objective and subjects your
assertions to critical analysis.

Yep, I agree.  Each individual has to come to this realization for himself
or herself.  Until its personal, no amount of convincing really helps.  It
may prompt them to explore the possibility, but can never confirm for anyone
that this is true.

(2) that is, the assertion that "of course God exists; he's present in you
and me and all things" (which isn't what you stated, exactly, but follows
the same reasoning) is circular and ultimately without empirical value.(3)

I undersand the circular reasoning of a lot of Biblical theology.  Even
though its not empirical, its circular-ness is in some ways part of its
beauty from this perspective.

(3) by the way, I hate footnotes of this sort, but sometimes they're close
to unavoidable.

Yup (1).

(1) I agree. ;-)

(...) Sorry guys - saying that belief in God requires a leap of faith - what you're saying in essence - is exactly what Kant said. God is, however, not removed from reality. Belief in God can indeed be arrived at through rational considerations - (...) (24 years ago, 1-Dec-00, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)
