To put my stance in perspective, and I
expect the vast majority of you to disagree, I don't feel that there is any
moral difference between testing drugs on Negros or homosexuals (or any other
group) and testing drugs on monkeys or cats.

Does this mean that if you contracted a life-threatening illness, you would
refuse any treatment that in large part resulted from animal testing?

No.

If not, why not?

For two reasons.

First, because the harm has already been done.  I also assert that we should
use the gains of the Nazi doctors.  You can (rightly) claim that by being a
consumer of that good, I'm reinforcing that behavior as profitable.  But it
does sort of feel like a catch 22 for me.

And second, because my level of hypocracy (and we all have one) allows me to
use those products because my life depends on it, even if I'm sqeamish about
it.  Actually, I'm much more open about level of hypocracy than most people.  I
claim to take the moral high road, but I also acknowledge that it's because I
can afford to.  If it came down to a colapse of civilization, I'd abandon my
classical liberal ideals of justice and I would hunt, kill, and eat any animals
(starting with my neighbors (for several reasons)) that I had to.

I would never cheat you in a LEGO deal, but if I _had_ to steal from you to
feed my starving child, I'd do it in a second.  (But I don't believe that I'll
ever have to steal for survival.)

Chris
