Amendment II

Rereading this, I'm not quite sure where I agree with your stated purpose of
the 2nd amendment.  I'm sure that it has that effect, but its purpose was not
to act as a safeguard against an out-of-control government.  It speaks more • of
a lack of a standing army and being a frontier country (at the time) than
anything.

It may say that to you now, looking back on things from a modern high
school American history perspective, but it didn't mean just that when
it was written.

Hmmmm, well, I would have thought that the High School perspective would be
that we needed guns to overthrow existing governments that got out of hand, so
what do I know?  :-)

I was actually responding from what I perceive to be their viewpoint at the
time - not a current one.  Certainly their wording seems to support that.

Think about the people involved in writing the first batch of
ammendments and what they had lived through.

Are you saying that they didn't mean what they wrote?  What you are hinting at
may well have been at the back of their minds, but it would have been easy
enough for them to have said in the amendment if that was what it was about.
