Dunno about you, but I LIKE art. I think its a shame that good art is
being driven out by bad. But that's what you get when you toss free
money around. Crud. I'm belligerent towards the NEA and the polarizing
effect public funding has on free expression, not towards art.

Aw, Larry, you had me right along with you up till this bit.  Well, I'm
still mostly with you, but a considerable problem with art today--and this
isn't just confined to our fine nation--is the predominant aesthetic trend as
much as any dubious endowments by our government.  Worse, it must be said that
a "free" artistic market doesn't guarantee good art any more than the NEA
does.  Bad art which is popular will sell and propogate, while good art which
is not popular will not sell.  Danielle Steele outsells Cormac McCarthy, but
she's hardly a better (or even credible) artist.

You have a point, however, I think we are on the verge (if not already
over the cliff) of having a market which will again support good art.
This is due to the internet. With the minimal cost of distribution, who
cares what the mass market wants, the "good" art still has a chance to
reach those who appreciate it.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Borders Books and Barns and Noble go out
of buisiness in the next 50 years, because the good books won't be sold
by them, and even the bad books will be sold over the internet, all
directly by the author.

(...) B&N is a better online bookseller than amazon, IMHO. Especially their OOP/secondhand books. As far as online publishing by the author is concerned, I refer you to the messages posted to rec.arts.sf.composition by Gene Steinberg. Jasper (24 years ago, 7-Jan-00, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)
