Well, time will tell, but I do know one thing from being in a streaky • business
myself-- you have to strike while the iron is hot.  It is times like those • when a
business is hot that will carry a business through the cool times, and I'd • like to

AFOLers.

I wonder how long the type of things he does will continue to work. Right
now there is a feeding frenzy as he cleans out desirable discontinued sets.
In 2002, will there be any significant stock of 2000 sets lying around that
AFOLs will pay something close to original MSRP for (remember that DYA's
discounts really aren't very steep)? I know there will always be
inefficiencies in the distribution, which will result in some warehouses
with old sets, but I suspect the quantities will drop, and the demand will
drop.

I doubt it.  The demand for the older sets, will go up exponentially, and DYA
will probably raise prices at that point IF Emmanuel deems it necessary (like
he thinks "hm, not getting as much through my contacts as I used to...").

As the Internet explodes, demand for ANY discontinued set, recent or not, will
increase.  A set you hate or wouldn't look at twice will have
hundreds/thousands of people clamoring for it (I could care less about Fort
Legoredo, and up until about a month ago, ignored trains).

Also, LEGO Direct could have a severe impact, why buy an old set just
for the train windows which are now available by themselves from LEGO
Direct?

True.  But I didn't buy ANY of the huge train order I made recently for parts.
And I'm reconsidering splitting up any of the 4532/4539s on the way to me too.

On the other hand, if the growth of the AFOL hobby continues, there could
very well end up being a demand for all those 1999 town junior sets that
must be lying around somewhere.

EXACTLY.

(...) Yup. Although some sets are just plain cooler than others, any discontinued set becomes more valuable. Today's commonplace set becomes tomorrow's rarity.
