You're probably right - my understanding of the times having come from motion
picture portrayal :) (1)
I would argue that politeness could come from *communities* having to get on to
survive in a hostile new environment.
As very few of us seem to have a real concept of what a community is, boxed up
as we are in our own well-protected fortresses of wood, steel and mind, it's
hard for us to imagine what affect a community would have in terms of
politeness, social attitudes etc.
I don't think you need guns to be polite, it's attacking the symptom not the
problem.
