Prophetable colors

Let me get this straight - a bunch of people pay money to join an organization that tells me what colors I want?

Huh??

This is either the most brilliant science ever, or it’s a bunch of hooey.

Color is big business, so it’s no real suprise. And color plays a important part in the appeal of a product. I’ve had friends go through art school and within the first two years, you take several color theory classes; to the point where they’re sick of it (what emotions colors evoke; the symbolism of colors; what color palletes work well together & what don’t, etc.). In one exercise my friends had to do, they had to make a mosiac of something, without repeating the same color patch... Didn’t look like fun, so I stuck with programming. :)

If you think about it, primary colors appeal to children. As you grow older, your appetite for color becomes more refined. Women seem to have a knack for distinguishing the difference between ‘royal blue’ and ‘navy blue’ -- to me, it’s all ‘dark blue’. And if I worked in our newspaper’s color department, I could probably give you the Pantone number for each color.

I am a little suprised that it’s taken LEGO 20+ years to catch onto the idea. For the longest time, my biggest lament was that I couldn’t find enough green parts, then a few years ago, you found it in almost every set. I like earth tones, so when tan came out I was very excited. Alot of us would love to see a release of an earth-tone bucket; especially in castle. I honestly hate the new color scheme; but LEGO has probably done thier market research and on some level, it must appeal to kids 6-12.

This kind of stuff makes my brain hurt... “Let’s try to convince people that they need to replace their (cloths / appliances / furniture / whatever) just because we tell them that these new colors are better!”

The fashion industry, I would imagine, is the driving force behind this group. I think other groups just fall in-line behind them.

If our favorite toy company believes this, we’re all in a world of hurt.

I’m sure LEGO does a lot of research into these kinds of things that we don’t know about, or take for granted...

(...) Sorry, the above should have read "I honestley hate the new color scheme for castle"... I'm still undecided about the color changes... I need to get enough of the new colors & build a few things with both colors to see if (a) I like it or not; (...) (20 years ago, 14-Jul-04, to lugnet.off-topic.debate, lugnet.color, FTX)
