Well, thanks for nothing, Don. The reason I asked it here is because
I was hoping to learn what people in this forum think, rather than what
the distilled wisdom of the Internet has to offer.

Sorry, I just found it interesting that google returned this link:
http://216.239.51.104/search?q=cache:ZxTwHLsCi9cJ:www.williambowles.info/spysrus/terror.html+movie+terrorist+strike+martial+law&hl=en&start=17
on the second page of my search for terrorist movie references.
Apparently thats where you get all your material. Its got your
question, your cigar mag reference, everything. And google corrolated
it with a bunch of blather about some silly movie. That says something
to me.
|
Well, what does it say to you, exactly? Franks interview in Cigar Afficianado
is now a matter of public record, so its fair game for my question.
Ive never seen The Siege, so I cant
comment on the relevance of that piece of fiction to the current political
landscape. I will say that
Orwells 1984 parallels much of the policy of Dubyas administration.

Did you know kids are to watching the the latest Hollywood has to offer
for science class? What do you think of that?
|
Are you talking about The Day After
Tomorrow, universally deplored by everyone with an iota of scientific
understanding? I havent heard that its been used in science classes, but
if you have a link to a story, Id be happy to read it.
|
I happen to know of a local high school Earth Science class who went
to see it for a field trip, but I dont know how the discussion went
afterwards.
|
Well, then we have to exclude that example from the debate, dont we? The class
could have discussed the farcical doomsday scenario shown in the film or they
could have discussed its merits. Without knowing which is the case, theres no
way we can formulate an opinion of the example.

Heres a UK link that talks about using the trailer.
http://www.ase.org.uk/htm/teacherzone/upd8/upd832/upd8climate.php
This summers massive disaster movie The Day After Tomorrow
goes on global release on 28 May. It dramatically (if not entirely
accurately!) brings home the tremendous dangers and costs of global
warming. This UPD8 activity shows how global warming causes
flooding, and gets students to devise a British flood strategy.
Students then present their strategies as manifestos aimed at
winning votes in upcoming elections.
|
Okay, so the trailer is being used as a springboard for discussion. As long as
the film isnt treated as a factual document, then whats the harm? However,
perhaps the assignment should relate to discussing the factual shortcomings of
the film, to show how serious scientific issues can be misrepresented.
On the other hand, I had to watch the film Hemo the Magnificent at least half a dozen times throughout my schooling, and
never once did we discuss the inaccuracy of portraying the anthropomorphic
incarnation of blood.
Dave!
