I assert that I’m not inclined to reward idiots who go out of their way to kill or maim themselves (eg, if you use your lawnmower as a ceiling fan, then you have no claim to damages when it cuts off the top of your skull). However, if you want to get rid of costly pain-and-suffering compensation, then you should simply allow courts to reward infinite punitive damages when a company is deliberately or culpably negligent or injurious.

And see, that’s the line for me. If a corp. is negligent and that negligence *caused* harm, then the corp. should be on the hook. If you are in a drunken stupor, and you, in that intoxicated state, do something remotely foolish, even to the point of just falling flat on your henie, and you injure yourself as a direct result of you being intoxicated, in my world you would not be able to claim compense from *anyone*. As a matter of fact, I’d almost go so far as to charge you monetary fees for the ambulance and/or medical costs incurred, and I would have no problem with an owner of an establishment in which a drunken person broke something (chair, glass, displays) to seek compensation for the damaged items from said drunk.

I cannot see how ‘Wham-O’ or ‘Nameless School Bus Company’ could remotely be construed as negligent when an intoxicated individual commits a foolish act in the vicinity of a product of these companies.

But that’s just my supposed ‘liberal’ views speaking. As an aside, I never once said I was a liberal (searking my faulty memory).

But I was in any case referring to such Conservatives as Kennyboy Lay, George W. Bush, Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, Paul Wolfowitz, Condoleezza Rice, and others. Clearly they consider themselves absolutely immune to the consequences of their actions.

Clearly. I’d also like to note that I think that Dubya and his cronies are willfully negligent and are *causing* the deaths and injury of countless individuals and destruction of property.

Again, imho.

(...) So you're saying that anyone who seeks compensation for a dumb action that he himself commits must be a liberal? I suspect that you're kidding, because otherwise you're asserting that no Conservative has ever sought, will ever seek, or would (...) (21 years ago, 11-Sep-03, to lugnet.off-topic.debate, FTX)
