I absolutely despise yahoo, but for even more reasons.  My family has
sbc-yahoo dsl.  To start, it requires that you have a 300 MHz or faster
machine to run the software.  It checks to make sure your machine meets this
requirement.  So, my computer, being the only one in the house faster than
that, got to be the lucky recipient of *15* separate pieces of software (ie,
to uninstall, there are 15 separate entries in the windows uninstall applet,
and woe to ye who uninstall in the wrong order--I literally could have
reinstalled windows faster, and I should have...).

I remember surfing the net at T1 speeds in my dorm room 7 years ago on my
pentium 133.  But with all the crap yahoo put on my comp, it's no wonder
they required a 300.  After going through all the installation crap, I
finally got what I wanted: a login and password for PPPoE.  That was all I
needed, but no, I had to install an entire cd's worth of junk onto my
computer, only to plug these two tiny pieces of information into my router
and be done with it.

Besides the rediculous amount of useless memory-hog-ware, it's just as
expensive as any other dsl, slower, has crappy newsgroup retention, spams
your email account with yahoo garbage (which you can turn off, but why
should I have to do that?), and has the same "make sure the computer is on;
is the computer plugged into the wall?" style tech support.

Ahhhh... that felt good.  :)

(...) Really? I went with the local cable company's cable modem, and besides having DHCP running (it was from all my years of LAN network games) I didn't have to do a thing to my PC. Plug it in, and et voila! Internet at high speed. Oh, and with (...) (21 years ago, 20-Jun-03, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)

Wow! Truer words were never posted. It was like one long horrible nightmare of software I didn't want or need just to sign on for the first time, just as you have written. And the uninstalls are not too clean no matter what. I ran some anti-virus (...) (21 years ago, 20-Jun-03, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)

Agree with all that, but let me warn you MSN is worse. We signed up with the SBC Yahoo DSL service here at the office, but we were able to use a router and some creativity to sneak around having to install all their extra garbage. Scott C. (21 years ago, 20-Jun-03, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)
