I wasn't really holding the guy up for sainthood, mind you -- there not
being too many politicians on the side of the angels.

I agree with your assessment of politics as usual.  If Byrd is making a bid
for a soundbite, at least I am not disagreeing with any of the messages
within the speech I referenced earlier.  That's why I said "speaks for
itself" -- attempting to place the speech in isolation, perhaps even in
isolation from it's speaker.

The other day you questioned the validity of various sources.  I guess in
the main I am just interested in those speaking an approximation of the
truth that I believe in (an assessment of the truth that I also believe to
be reasonably objective).  I don't really care where they are coming from if
they have something good to say.

Politically, I am just a nibbler -- nothing satisfies if I have to take all
of it at once.  Like a conservative I agree with limited government, low
taxes, and gun rights.  Like a liberal I agree with a truly fair market
place, and not one dedicated exclusively/largely to protecting the concerns
of the extravagantly wealthy.  Also like a liberal I believe in social
reforms as a being part of the public good.  As a radical I believe in drug
decriminalization and less restrictive IP rights.  I am all over the map
politically: generally in favor of fewer restrictions and an increase to our
concept of liberty.  When I have from time to time surveyed the field of
american politics, I have discovered that no single party is able to address
all of my concerns without also undermining political ideals that I consider
fundamental to our system of government.  More generally, the various
parties are more about talk than action.

(...) Joining any party is a compromise. The party system has its good points, but most of the time I wish I were governed by individuals rather than parties stuffed full of "yes-men". (...) Let's try this again. "The Truth Will Emerge..." (URL) truth will emerge"... more like "the PORK will emerge". Byrd may be right about Iraq, for the most part. Unnecessary war, and what appears to be a bungling of the aftermath in a much more (...) (21 years ago, 23-May-03, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)
