We had Republicans George Deukmejian and Pete Wilson before Gray Davis so I
wouldn't call it that much of a Democrat state (Let's toss in Nixon and
Reagan, though I suppose one can counter that both of our senators are
currently fairly liberal Democrats). For that matter, Davis is so
middle-of-the-road bland he could have run as a Republican.
Riordan probably would have beaten Davis, but the extreme right couldn't
stand the thought of a moderate and put up such a patsy that even Davis beat
him. Pathetic, but then again, the Democrats re-nominated Davis, and that
was pretty pathetic, too.
The deficit was primarily due to investments not coming up to projected
revenues (i.e. the stock market went down), but at a certain point we need
to wonder if the services are worth the taxes.

"Taxes should hurt"
