Consider that these books are not offered as proof of the Lord Jesus Christ,
but rather as a testimony of Him.  It is left up to the reader to investigate
and to pray so that he or she may find answers through inspiration from the
Holy Ghost.

According to _The Refiner's Fire_ Mormonism only exists because Joseph
Smith, in New York state, was trying to figure out which of the several
confusing, competing factions in that area to 'go' with and ran off into
the woods to pray on it as some biblical passage suggests.  And either
he started making that stuff up then, or it was revealed, depending on
your beliefs.

However, you speak of a web of trust.  The prophet Joseph Smith, as well as
members of the three witnesses and later the eight witnesses of the
golden plates, are within my web of trust.  I personally believe their
testimonies to be good enough to add to my own.

But would they believe you if you were visited by an agent of the Lord
and told to reveal new testament?

Wow, I never thought I'd get the courage to say *that* on LUGNET.  :-,

Why?

(...) Ok (...) Hey, I thought logic was only meaning_ful_ without feeling. That whole Spock thing, y'know? -- logic with feeling ain't really logic. (...) Hmmm. Well, this is one place where I kind of get confused. See, I believe that God didn't (...) (25 years ago, 31-Aug-99, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)
