According to _The Refiner's Fire_ Mormonism only exists because Joseph
Smith, in New York state, was trying to figure out which of the several
confusing, competing factions in that area to 'go' with and ran off into
the woods to pray on it as some biblical passage suggests. And either
he started making that stuff up then, or it was revealed, depending on
your beliefs.

But would they believe you if you were visited by an agent of the Lord
and told to reveal new testament?
