According to _The Refiner's Fire_ Mormonism only exists because Joseph
Smith, in New York state, was trying to figure out which of the several
confusing, competing factions in that area to 'go' with and ran off into
the woods to pray on it as some biblical passage suggests.  And either
he started making that stuff up then, or it was revealed, depending on
your beliefs.

Hrmmm...  Yes.  Yes, in a very rough nutshell.  I believe that the revelation
stuff happened, personally.  I have no idea what _The Refiner's Fire_ is
(though I assume it's a book).  This event is described rather well in Joseph
Smith's words at the beginning of the Book of Mormon.

However, you speak of a web of trust.  The prophet Joseph Smith, as well as
members of the three witnesses and later the eight witnesses of the
golden plates, are within my web of trust.  I personally believe their
testimonies to be good enough to add to my own.
But would they believe you if you were visited by an agent of the Lord
and told to reveal new testament?

Oooh, good question.  It really depends on how good I am at convincing them,
doesn't it?

Cheers,
