Actually, I think the real test of an invention's precedence comes in its
fecundity. It's all well and good that the ancient Greeks developed the
principle of the steam engine, but if it wasn't used, then it's irrelevant
except as a novelty of history.
You're right about the Chinese and printing, but I thought the real key
was the invention not of printing, but of the printing press. China had
used moveable type since the 11th century, but Gutenberg's press allowed for
more rapid printing than had previously existed.
That's not to say that the Chinese didn't invent something really
cool--far from it! If I'd had to write all those ideograms (with my
atrocious penmanship), I would have given all my peas and carrots to the
person who invented a better system!

Sure, but without evidence there's no reason to assume that an assertion
*is* true. It's fine to think that so-and-so *might* be true, but I'll wait
for more conclusive evidence, thanks!
