OK, how about a "duty" that it's OK to shirk, but that if you don't shirk,
gets you something extra, some privilege (I just can't spell that word!)

served in the defense forces got to vote... an example that has been given
here before, so not looking to set off a big discussion on why the movie
doesn't live up to the intent of the author of the book, etc... but if
people want to, why, feel free!)

Fair enough. Duty is not the word I would have chosen, but I would more or
less agree with you on this, although I'm not sure that attaching something
extra or some privilege is appropriate.

That's not quite the dictionary definition but it's what I have in mind.

I've seen terms defined on LUGNET which are a lot further from their
dictionary definition! :-)

I really don't want to be defended by conscript police (c.f. Clockwork
Orange) or drafted armies, and I don't want to be tried by people who
desperately don't want to be on jury duty but would rather be somewhere else.

I want to be tried by a jury of my *peers*, that is, people who think it's
an honor to be called for jury duty, intend to pay close attention to the
facts of the case as presented, and the laws that are claimed to apply, and
will make a decision to the best of their abilities on both the justness of
the law and the validity and applicability of the facts.

Is the "justness of the law and the validity and applicability of the facts"
explicitly what the jury is there for in the US?

Cheers

(...) Depends on who you ask. Most judges will tell you it is not your place as a juror to weigh the justness of the law, that your duty is only to the validity and applicability of the facts and that you have no power to judge (nullify) law.
