Maybe, but even with the arms you US civilians do have, do you think that is
realistic?

Yes.  If a large chunk (say, 50%) of the US population used handguns and rifles
to overthrow the national government for the sake of instilling a better one,
I'm sure that we would defeat the military.  They would not posess the will to
put the population down.
