Believe it or not, Americans are naive enough to think themselves immune to

OVER THE WORLD!

Most people I know (who express an opinion on the matter) are aware of the
corruption and are equally aware that there's little the average citizen can
do about it.
  <insert third-gov't-party ad here>
As long as humans are subject to greed, and as long as power corrupts,
government will be inherently corruptable.  The most we can hope
(fleetingly, perhaps) is that those in power will at least have some notion
of our best interests in mind.

I think the U.S. is corrupt up to the eyeballs, its just
well-concealed and at a much higher cost to the buyer.  What I mean is that
you can buy a cop here just as easily as in Mexico, its just that in Mexico
it might only cost you $20-50 bucks depending on the pretended
offense...here it's a seller's market...

Well, then by definition you can't "buy a cop here just as easily as in
Mexico."  If it costs more, it's not as easy.

...but don't get me wrong, I love the U.S. -- it has the best government
money can buy!

There is nothing new under the sun.  Government has always been
bureaucratic and inherently corruptable; it's just that the manifestations
of corruption and bureaucracy have not always taken the same forms.
Likewise, the means by which government is purchased have not always been
the same.

(...) Less government power, less possible avenues of corruption. Yes, private interests also can be corrupt, but as long as there are no barriers to entry, corrupt (and therefore inefficent) companies get displaced by honest ones. ++Lar (23 years ago, 9-May-01, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)
