You have been warned
Here are two new
offerings, this time rendered on non-purple backgrounds.

Yes, I think I like the non-purple, although my original thought was a
completely white background; you still have some shading things going on
there. But IMO its an improvement over purple.
|
I tried one in pure-white, but it wound up looking washed-out and faded. The
two that you see here are POV-Rays Gray95 and the default floor color from
Lars Hassings most excellent L3P program. All props to Lars, as always!

As I was examining your MOCs more closely, I started to notice the non-LEGO
elements which are a part of the Apocryphal library, and I found myself
smiling and thinking how nice it would be to have some of those elements. It
does, in a way, seem rather silly to restrict oneself to purely LEGO elements
if one is creating a purely virtual reality, but whatever.
|
There are two ways to look at this: either as a fun diversion from real-world
LEGO purity; or the tip of the wedge by which I endow the masses with an
appreciation for clone brands. Ill let you decide...
Lately Ive realized that I suffer from my own form of purists psychosis, in
that I confine my MOCs to Mega-Bloks-only elements. Sure, some of the parts
that you see have LEGO analogs (the 2x4 brick, the 1x3 plate, etc.) but the
real-world equivalent of every virtual brick in these MOCs can be gleaned from a
Mega Bloks set (and in the represented colors, to boot!).
In making this realization, Ive realized also that purists arent as nutty as I
used to think them to be: I find it quite inspiring to confine ones palette to
a specific set of bricks and colors. It has nothing to do with brand purity
per se, but rather the desire to work from a seemingly more restrictive
platform.

What I am wondering is this, Dave! Are you able to apply the settings of
someone who has rendered in POV-RAY to your own MOCs, such as these examples
below?
|
POV-Ray lighting is probably my biggest weakness in the rendering game. I tried
Jeroens radiosity settings but couldnt tell heads from tails.
If some kind soul would care to point me to a set of ready-to-use radiosity
settings for the total simpleton, Id be most appreciative.
|
Overall, though, I think your work is pretty good, Dave! (for an apostate:-)
|
Thank you very much--thats quite a compliment, coming from such an accomplished
builder.
Of course, I still believe that youre a total slacker, and its really Ross who
does all the truly cool stuff. 8^)
Dave!
