Arguably, WalMart and Target are just getting their revenge on TRU etc.
After all, companies like TRU are known as "category killers" whose business
model of having the largest range of products in some category, and is
antithetical to the "variety store" business model of WalMart and Target in
which the customer is offered "one stop shopping" (a bit of everything is
available). It seems to me that both business models have their strengths
and weaknesses, and obviously when they compete, they will play to their
strengths. That is, capitalism is just getting on with the business of
making money.
Which is best for the Lego fan? Well, in Australia at least, the variety
stores tend to have the most frequent and largest discounts available on
Lego, but rarely have the range (particularly in the larger sets) that TRU
carry. Admittedly since S@H became available in Australia, TRU has lost a
lot of my business as S@H carries a bigger range at similar kinds of prices,
and while I have to pay shipping at S@H, it saves me a long drive to the
other side of town to get to TRU. It is a crazy world I think in which it is
easier for me to buy my Lego from Denmark than from the other side of my
home town but that's retailing for you :-)
