I don't think being able to use the server to put a watch on item is going to
have a negative effect. If anything, it will serve to increase final selling
prices.
Anyone who is serious about sniping already has a system to keep track of
interesting auctions. More than likely they use a piece of software running on
their own computer. So eBay's watch service is going to have little impact on
this group of people, except to possibly simplify their lives.
People who didn't have a system to track auctions now have one. I will
occasionally scan the list of LEGO auctions on eBay, but I quickly forget what
was there, and potentially miss out on stuff because I don't re-scan often
enough. If I can flag auctions when I see them, I'm more likely to bid on them
later.
