.. So to get back - they keep telling me at my bank that when the
money is sent from US there is "swift" and "postal order" way .
Swift is fast and expensive one (used regularly), while the other
one (US bank is sending money order to my bank via regular post)
takes longer but is free ...  it might be that this ontehr one is actually
International money order, but I am not sure while in this case it
would be sent to me, and not bank  to bank   !

I sometimes get money orders from overseas (especially Japan) which are
printed by Canada Post (I'm in Canada) and I suspect this is the kind of
thing you're talking about - the person in Japan orders the MO at their bank
and pays for it, and it gets printed here and mailed to me. I have never had
one like this from anyone in the US, though.

I once asked my credit union about "wiring" money, and they really
didn't have a way to do it. I suspect part of what is going on is that
the US banks can afford to be US-Centric, and may also be in a poor
position to do some things because of US banking law (which still crimps
the style of banks operating across state lines, though not as much as
it used to). I have had Europeans talk about being able to do things
much easier than we can. If all of my understanding has any relation to
reality, then the non-US banks are probably just quoting how they in
general do buisiness with banks in other countries (and they may even be
able to send money to the US in that fashion).
