I went into the Mountain View, CA Wal-Mart sale this evening and saw a
big red Lego logo hanging from the ceiling where you enter. I was pleased
to find a wide selection of 1998 and 1999 sets at substansial discounts.

Here are the prices of the sets I purchased:

3051 Blaze Attack - 11.97
6088 Robber's Retreat - 23.97
3052 Ninja Fire Fortress - 23.97
3033 Blue Tub - 15.97

Wow!  So was 3033 for sale at 25% off then?  3033 is one of the sets that
was supposedly cancelled, according to my sources -- it was 1200 pieces for
$19.99 according to LEGO S@H.  I know it was released to Wal*Mart for a
special promotion, but LSI sent out a form-letter to retailers this spring
notifying them that they wouldn't in fact be able to get 3033 as earlier
promised.

3033 blue tub?I've seen them at Wal-mart, K-mart and Target out here in
Illinois.I bought some at Target  in early March, and they still have them on
the shelf this week. I've saw at least 20 on the shelf at Wal-mart today (some
in the garden center tippy top shelves). I almost shed a tear when I got to the
bag with the white & red and there was no silver brick. After a few, I was
thinking, "maybe they forgot this isn't the anniversary bucket", but no luck
:-)

3033 blue tub is still very common in the SF bay area. Even if TLG canceled it,
it would take quite a long time for them to disappear in the channel. I find
their decision to cancel buckets a bit bewildering - either they should put
less bricks in the bucket or raise the price. Maybe TLG has realized that the
main purpose of buckets is to feed the very active, Internet-based secondary
economy of Lego bricks, and the cancellation of buckets is a prelude to TLG
switching to an auction-based distribution of bricks.
