It seems to me they should eat it. In all probability, they paid nothing
since they presumably don't exchange money on a daily basis. From what I
know about credit card companies (from my mother working the phones for
a credit card company), I strongly suspect they would fix the problem,
even if policy doesn't really cover it. If the customer service person
doesn't fix it, ask to speak to a manager (which may prompt the person
to just go ahead and fix it).
p.s. little tip - if you have a card with an annual fee, call them up
and ask to have the fee removed, or just threaten to cancel the card
(another tip from my mom). After a couple years of this, they may even
stop trying to charge you (happened for me, I started with a free card,
the next year the fee was going to be $20, but they offered to upgrad me
to a silver card for the $20, the next year, they tried to hit me with a
$40 fee, having heard the tip from my mom, I called them up and asked to
return to the normal card, they said, ok, why don't you try the silver
card one more year, and we'll waive the fee, the next year, same thing,
subsequently, I have never seen the annual fee).
