It's true that what you have in your shopping cart doesn't mean that you
bought it yet, someone else might have the same item(s) in their cart and
checkout first at which point the item(s) are subtracted from the seller's
inventory.
When you submit an order, you get a list of the items you bought and their
status - 99.9% of the time "Processed" in green.
When you click "submit order", all items in your cart get processed:
If the current stock quantity is 0, you will get "Out of Stock" status message
in bright red.
If the current stock is less than your desired quantity, you will get "Qty no
longer current" status message in orange and the remaining quantity will be
added to your order.
The seller's inventory is locked from the time you click "submit order" till
the time it has been processed - 1 or 2 seconds. This is to make sure that 2
people don't buy the same item(s) at exactly the same time. By adding the
same item into your cart more than once will replace the quantity you had
there before so there is no danger in having to pay more than could be
fulfilled.
The only way you wouldn't get the items you asked for would be if the seller
actually didn't have them.
Come to think of it, you don't really have to exchange a single e-mail during
the transaction: As a buyer when you submit an order, you can just keep
checking the status of that order. "Pending" means that it hasn't been
finalized yet, "Ready" means that is has been finalized and all items in order
counted and verified. Shipping/insurance/delivery confirmation should also be
entered by the seller when they change the order status to "Ready".
