Selling my collection is something I have contemplated (psudo attempted) for
several years (also to assist in the purchase of a new house). The amount of
cash return must be carefully balanced with the time requirement for the sale.
My basic theory is the smaller you are able to break down your lots (down to a
single piece (bricklink)) the higher return you will get for your pieces. If
you really are willing to sell an $8,000 collection for $2,000 I imagine there
are 10-12 buyers that may take a look (depending if you are assuming your value
on MSRP or actual clearance checkout prices).
Bricklink offers the best cash return but I am finding the pains of placing a
collection of my size in my inventory from scratch to be EXTREMELY tedious.
Sales are completely at the whim of the buyer. And a sale means pulling and
counting the order, packaging, emailing, feedbacking and thats assuming
everything goes without a hitch.
Selling lots on ebay would probably return less cash but YOU would be in more
control of the process. If you primarily want to send packages out on Saturday,
set up your auctions to help that happen. Don't worry about getting slammed
with orders, sell your collection at your speed (sell those silly castle figures
first :)
As for selling MOCs I doubt you'd ever be happy with what you recieved.
Everyone takes pride in their creations, no matter how much of the idea they
have borrowed and a buyer just does not value that effort. You can also see
that those builders you used as examples have strong feelings for their work too
(though I wish they would have expressed it a little different).
Best of luck to you but selling a sizable collection just isn't that simple.
Matt
PS. My collection is still for sale to a single buyer, be ready to cough up a
minimum $8K (1/3 of collection is listing at $10,000 on bricklink (apx))
PSS. Castle guys, love ya, wouldn't know what to do without ya. What better way
to sight in a figs laser rifle than on your primative populations?

| (...) That's always been roughly my theory-- however, as you pointed out, and as I've always been curious, is it *really* true? Essentially, if you sell an entire collection, you'll be lucky to recoup the full value. Even 1/4 the full value. And the (...) (21 years ago, 13-Nov-03, to lugnet.market.buy-sell-trade)
