Here is my inventory situation:

I have bought most of my sets on sale or clearance.
I had a Bricklink store as well as selling on eBay. The sets I bought on
clearance, then resold for profit, was intended to "finance" the pieces for MOC
and the sets I wanted to keep as sets. I now have no more intentions of selling
the rest of what I have.

I used them since for MOC and there are now partial set, some without boxes. In
my mind, the fair value would be the purchase price. But then all the sets which
have missing pieces, should be valued as bulk pieces (or weight). At this point,
it would be close to impossible to find scattered pieces to complete a set, and
like I said earlier, I sold some pieces individually, and in order to complete a
set, I would have to buy them on Bricklink or other sources.

I have a few sets that I purchased at lower cost that are still new, some sealed
and some not sealed. I believe the fair value should be the purchase price only
and even lower considering the amortization. Those sets aren't for sale and will
not be sold.

Same as some used sets that I have collected over the years, some were gifts,
some were real bargains. I also believe that the purchase price should be
considered.

I believe the MOC have a bulk value. Some have valuable pieces, but most are
built with standard bricks. I have a lot of technic MOC that I built for shows
like robots and GBC and they "suffer" a great amount of wear and tear. The
electrical pieces are very much abused, and a lot of pieces, like gears, motors
broke and needed to be replaced. Lots of pieces have scratches or dents due to
the use of them.

During shows, the train motors are very stressed and they don't last long. Same
for any other motors.

The overall condition of my pieces are in used condition. As of selling
standards, a mint piece is still in the polybag, and it is not mint in the sense
of they could be scratched. They can be called new. Some sellers use white glove
to sort the pieces they sell. I never did so, my fingers are on all over the
pieces... I still have new pieces in the polybags, but most are sorted and used.
A fair amount of pieces were donated to me... (still no value because I would
donate them as well in the case I would have to part with them)

The sets bought from Shop@Home, regular price or sale price, should have a lower
value if used or not complete, or the same value in the case of still new.

To resume, I believe that the inflated or speculated value on selling websites
are only for buying/selling purpouses and shouldn't be used for a fair appraisal
value.

(...) Very different, yes. Mostly because selling the collection as a whole attracts almost nobody as buyers. You won't find many people willing to shell out thousands of dollars for an entire AFOL collection. (...) I'm not sure if that's (...) (17 years ago, 14-May-08, to lugnet.market.appraisal)
