Hi all.  This is my first post to the appraisal area, as I am confident
someone out there would have an answer to my question.  A recent discussion
in the Star Wars group got me thinking about how much money I've actually
invested in bricks.  The alarming dollar estimation then forced the
question, "what if my apartment suffered a fire or some other disaster that
melted or otherwise decimated the LEGO collection that I sunk at least
$2,000.00 into?"
I do have current renter's insurance, but the agent I recently spoke to
said LEGO bricks are considered a specialty item that must be appraised in
order to insure.  My collection consists of Star Wars sets only.  How do I
go about getting a large storage container of loose bricks and several other
containers filled with MOCs appraised?  Is appraisal even possible in this
manner?  Can appraisers take a "field count" and produce a dollar value
based on an estimated quantity of brick?  Any input would be much
appreciated.  Thanks.

I, myself, as well as many others here are concerned about not having proper
insurance coverage for our Lego collections.  I do not have any good answers
for you.

If I were to obtain insurance coverage for my own Lego, I would provide as
much
documentation as possible specifying how much money has been spent.  This
would
include retail sales receipts, internet purchase records and invoices, and the
like.  I would say that for the last 6 or 7 years I have been very good about
keeping all expense records for Lego I have bought at retail, and my online
purchase records are mainly email messages that I have archived.  About a year
ago I began to store images of Ebay auctions I had won along with the payment
data.  I also have stored the records of all of my Brickbay purchases.

More importantly, proof of ownership is probably required.  So I keep all
Lego instruction books--including duplicates and their boxes (stored flat) as
proof that I own each particular Lego set and could reproduce each Lego set if
required (I certainly hope not).  I do NOT keep the instruction books and
boxes from sets that I buy expressly to part-out as those are not part of my
collection.

All of this is in vain if my home is destroyed, however, since all of these
records are currently stored there.  So, secondary safe storage of the records
is also important.

I have never investigated insuring my Lego collection, but I do have a link
that may be helpful.  I found this info about 2 years ago but have never
contacted them.  Give it a try and tell us about it if you do.

Thanks for the link, Kevin. I, too, keep instructions but unfortunately I've been lax in archiving receipts and flat-folding boxes. I wish I made a habit of that from the beginning. I will contact The Insurance Center tomorrow and see what my (...) (23 years ago, 13-Dec-01, to lugnet.market.appraisal)
