Dave,

I have the set of plans Ben Fleskes made up and although I hade a similar
table made, I was going to make more and decided to change to Ben's design, as
mine was probably overkill.  (My wife has trouble lifting her half of it.)

As far as making some tables, I was going to make some this weekend -
tomorrow, as a matter of fact.  Since I have access to a farm maintainance
shop, I can get some cool tools.  I even have a machine that should work
perfectly for beveling the edges of the leg tops.  I am making 7 tables - 4 of
them 45 3/8" x 45 3/8" and 3 of them 45 3/8" x 30 1/4" of which I will use all
but 2 in my hobby room.  I also am making 24 legs, which is enough for me for
the time being.

I would like to paint them and figure that baseplate gray would be a good
choice.

As for the measurements, I feel that 30" is not enough depth for a nice town
layout and leaves no room for a monorail system, which I would like to run
through the town.  I then decided to go with a 45" depth that would allow 3
full road plates in the middle and a 3/4 plate on each end - one side eaten up
by tracks and the other side for row houses.  The two 30x45 tables I will use
will just be so that I can loop the outside track and the inside track
together.

I have to run to LA right now.  If anyone has an objection to Ben's design,
let me know, as I will have mine done soon and don't want to have to change
over.  I prefer making the right choice first, but until I have my tables,
Lego sits in the closet - not a good thing.

Finally, if mine turn out well, I would be willing to help others make some,
as long as it is not from Sept. to Nov. (my busy season - 100+ hr. work
weeks)  All they would need to do is drive down (or up) to Fresno and have
some way of taking their creation back with them.

I was wondering if there was interest in having a California Lego Train • Club?
I live outside of Fresno, where I can find no AFOLs.  I would like to start • a
train club and was wondering if anyone else in CA would like to discuss the
idea.

As I am near Fresno, I am equidistant from LA and SF.

Well, I know there are a few folks in the San Diego area, and a few in
the SF Bay Area (maybe more than a few, but I haven't found 'em yet), and
you and Carrie in the outer-reaches.

I'm a big proponent of getting a train group going. To that end, I'd
like to suggest that anyone interested in a wide-area train group should
consider building up a modular table or two, so that we can try to build
parts of a greater whole seperately, and then we can try to have an
occassional get-together where we bring the modules together to be bolted
into a bigger layout over a weekend, for fun and video/photo opportunities!

Consider my Round House project (http://baylug.org/zonker/RondDom.html)
as a start, and look for the building plans for the PNLTC-designed tables
on http://baylug.org/zonker/tables/building.html.

Building the tables is not for the beginner, or the faint-of-heart. But,
maybe we could work on a project day where a few folks with woodworking
tools build a bunch of tables, and sell them for (close to) cost to the
budding Calif. LTC members who don't want to get splinters in their hands?
