UK gets a raw deal again

The new Spybotics sets, such as 3806 Gigamesh G60, (URL) are GBP59.99 in the UK, or $59.99 in the USA. I make that about 50% more! Surely such a difference can't be justified. Could it be a mistake? Huw (22 years ago, 1-Jul-02, to lugnet.loc.uk, lugnet.lego.direct)

Re: UK gets a raw deal again

(...) And currently in New Zealand, 59.99 USD = 122.98 NZD whereas LEGO want 149.95 NZD for the Gigamesh G60. So it's not so bad here, but it is still about 22 percent more than the US price. Grahame (22 years ago, 1-Jul-02, to lugnet.loc.uk, lugnet.lego.direct)

Re: UK gets a raw deal again

The value of the US dollar had been falling the last several months - the pound has gained about 20% to 25% against the dollar recently. LEGO may not have planned on that when determining the prices. Also, isn't tax already included in the UK (...) (22 years ago, 1-Jul-02, to lugnet.loc.uk)

Re: UK gets a raw deal again

Are we surprised - no - it has always been $ = £ across the board, you name it. (...) (22 years ago, 1-Jul-02, to lugnet.loc.uk, lugnet.lego.direct)

Re: UK gets a raw deal again

(...) Oops - sorry about that - I should check how recent things are before posting and not rely on my memory. The dollar has only dropped about 8% against the pound in the last few months, which doesn't cover that much of a difference. The Euro, on (...) (22 years ago, 1-Jul-02, to lugnet.loc.uk)

Re: UK gets a raw deal again

In Holland it's EUR 89,99 = 88.7358 USD According to www.xe.com/ucc GBP 59.99 = 92.1177 USD, so that's 54% more.... But then again, salaries in the US are much higher than in Europe, so it all makes sense... or does it? Duq "Huw Millington" (...) (22 years ago, 2-Jul-02, to lugnet.loc.uk, lugnet.lego.direct)

(...) Not always. Cost of living also varies dramatically; in New Jersey, for example, $12,000 takes me much less far than it did in Leiden; however, it takes me farther than it did in Greater London. From my understanding of the VAT and so forth, (...) (22 years ago, 2-Jul-02, to lugnet.loc.uk, lugnet.lego.direct)

Re: UK gets a raw deal again

(...) The big problem is that "middle England" wants US levels of taxation coupled with European levels of public services. They want US level of (alleged) growth with EU environmental protection. Too few people are able to see that these things may (...) (22 years ago, 3-Jul-02, to lugnet.loc.uk, lugnet.lego.direct)

Re: UK gets a raw deal again

What's so great about Leiden? The only reason I live here is because of the international school in Leiderdorp that our daughter goes to. But I can't wait to leave Leiden behind me again. Do you know it's got the lowest average IQ in the country? (...) (22 years ago, 3-Jul-02, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)

Re: UK gets a raw deal again

(...) Leiden just happens to be where I lived while on research. Are you not Dutch (the international school)? The surname implies Dutchness. :) I didn't mind living in southwestern Leiden, but I lived north of Leiden-CS and that was less pleasant. (...) (22 years ago, 3-Jul-02, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)

Re: UK gets a raw deal again

Myself and a couple of friends spent a day there last year when we were cycling through Holland/Belgium. It was a warm day in the sun soaking up the local cultural offerings. It was outside term-time, so it was very quiet and quite relaxing. I doubt (...) (22 years ago, 4-Jul-02, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)

Re: UK gets a raw deal again

Your right. Although the original name is french (Valenduc) the spelling was changed when some Hugenots moved to Holland a few centuries ago. My better half is from Limerick though, so we'd like our kids to be bilingual, hence the international (...) (22 years ago, 4-Jul-02, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)
