Thanks for the lowdown. The market is so volatile at the moment its
difficult to know which service to go for. Not being an NTL customer
presumably means I have some 'hassle' (changing phone supplier etc.) • before
I can take advantage of their free service.

NTL and Calls4U both have the same offer: stay with BT, but plug in a box to
your master socket which will automatically divert calls via the new
company. The box costs £20, but all it does is prefix your outgoing calls
with a 4-digit code, e.g. 1592 for Mercury (remember them?) or 1696 for
Telco. These boxes pick up the phone number as you dial and determine
whether or not to route your call via BT (although the new suppliers can
undercut BT on local calls too)...

The Telco box even works from a Telewest cable phone set-up (none of the
others do)!

The cost to you is: £20 up front to buy the box + monthly line rental from
BT (possibly with a 'low user' discount as you won't pass calls through them
any more) + discounted call charges to NTL / Calls4U / etc...

No hassle!

Then again, with the market moving this fast, who knows what next week's
offer will be?!? There are plenty of companies offering free online time out
there already without these boxes - my dad's using Clara.net at the moment,
but he has a list of a couple of dozen others!
