I know I probably should ask this question in lugnet.trains, but then
I'd get suggestions that were unavailable in the UK.  So I hope people
don't mind me asking here.

I'm looking to get into Trains,

Don't do it!

what would be a good set to start with?

4565. It's still available in this country, and see the other posts
about toycity.

You get a proper engine, several wagons, and a goods yard as well. Um,
no controller, though. If you need one just ask here or in .trains; I've
got a couple spare.

All suggestions gratefully received.

I suggest you phone Busy Bee, and see what they've got.

Neil.
