Maybe that was just my experience.  I connected in Gatwick to a Duetch BA
flight.  I had a four hour layover and wanted to go to the American • Airlines
AAdmirals Club.  Since the AA club was in the other terminal and I didn't
have a valid boarding pass to leave from the other terminal,  they told • me
I
couldn't go through security.  After pressing my case they finally let me
through but it took a while.

If you needed to pass security, then yes, it would be difficult.

Can you do similar things in the US then?

It really varies by airport.  For example, in Newark, in order to get into
any of the gate areas you almost always need to show a ticket before you can
go through the security check.  Same goes for Boston.  In Raleigh (where I
live), anyone can go anywhere as long as you pass the security check.  My
experiences in Dallas, Chicago, LA, San Francisco, Portland, San Jose, and
many others is similar, you usually do not need to show a boarding pass to
get into the gate area.  There are periods of time when security is
hightened but this is rare.
