We’ve been discussinng this for quite a while, so I’m going to endeavour to
organize something.
The fact is that LEGO Train layouts go over extremely well at train shows. We
keep getting invites to various venues to display our LEGO train layouts.
To do this, obviously we need a train layout. rtlToronto has been consistent
with their train layout for many shows. However, rtlToronto is firmly ensconsed
(and rightly so) in the idea of a fully integrated ‘core’ layout.
Unfortunately, that kinda leaves the casual builder/displayer out from
contributing to the core layout.
I’ve been going off and doing my own thing (status quo) and trying to put
together my own little layout such that I can have it fully operational in my
basement as well as modular enough to take to shows. So that’s two ‘complete’
layouts that we can bring to shows.
But again, what if someone else wants to contribute modules? Well, here’s the
idea--
Going right back to the basics that many other LEGO train clubs have used--a
‘standard’ module setup.
The tracks come in from one side and go out the other. What you do with the
tracks and space inbetween is entirely up to you. The only ‘standard’ that you
ahve to follow is that the tracks must enter your module as pictured, and must
exit your module as pictured, and must be continuous--i.e. the traon has to be
able to go completely through your module to the module next to yours.
This allows you to build your area however you wish. You can build one module,
or many modules according to what you want to do.
What we may end up getting at a future show is something like this--
That’s my little layout on the left, the rtlToronto ‘core’ module on the right,
and the ‘ad hoc’ modules in the middle--able to expand as much as we want.
And if you really want to get fancy (and please clear this with me), you can do
a corner module so we can set up something like this--
Again, it’s all up to you.

I’ve posted to numerous Canadian groups and locations, but have set the followup
to just Ontario. That said, I’m encouraging anyone to comment and participate
in this endeavour!
As well, on a slightly different note, for future shows I’m going with Allan’s
naming suggestion. I don’t think Toronto is the centre of the universe :p and
therefore for future shows it’ll be something like ‘CanBrick’ or I was thinking
about CLBA--Canadian LEGO Brick Association. Whatever, as long as it’s
inclusive! :)
