On Friday I brought in about US$725 of classic space LEGO
that I had shipped to me at work (in the USA) from a private
sale.  I was charged both GST and PST at the border.  I am
now filing an appeal form considering I was told by official
channels that there would only be GST.  Here's hoping I get
my $86 back, but I'm not holding my breath.

Kyle,

I don't think you will have much luck getting your PST back.  CCRA (was Revenue
Canada) and the province of Ontario have a service level agreement to collect
PST at the border.  I just double checked the Customs site and CCRA also has
agreements to collect PST for BC, Manitoba, Ontario, and Quebec on postal
imports.  They also collect HST if you live in Nfld, N.B., or N.S.

Based on their information, duties and taxes will apply on goods over $20 or
gifts over $60.  Collecting tax on stuff mailed to you is news to me.  I'm
going to be a lot more selective with my eBay bids from now on.

I hope they do cut you some slack and return your money.  Good luck.

Andrew Burt

Following up my own message here. I had posted in the previous message that in Ontario you should only have to pay GST on imported LEGO from the USA. This was based on information given to me directly by Customs by telephone. As it turns out this (...) (24 years ago, 29-Jan-01, to lugnet.loc.ca)
